Position Description

Under direction, the ESL Program Specialist provides services –including teaching and instruction- as detailed below, to students, families and staff.

Required Experience

Minimum of two years’ teaching experience.

Preference given for charter school knowledge and experience.

Required Credentials / Licenses / Certifications

Possession of a basic teaching credential as issued by the California Commission for Teacher Preparation and Licensing. A bilingual credential or certificate; or passage of the oral tests of the language component of the Bilingual Certificate of Competence (BCC) Exam; or a Cross-cultural Language Acquisition Development (CLAD) or Language Development Specialist (LDS) Certificate; or two semester units of college course work in foreign language; or foreign language fluency (A, B or C level) verified by GCC examination; or High Intensity Language Acquisition Project (HILAP)/Master Plan Teacher Training Program (MTTP) language classes of at least 32 hours or other comparable language acquisition coursework.

Education Requirements

A baccalaureate or higher degree from an approved institution, with preference to those who have had training and experience in bilingual-bicultural programs.

Major Duties and Responsibilities

  • Assists in collecting data on students whose dominant language is other than English.
  • Assists Principal, Site Manager and staff in organizing and implementation of programs for students whose dominant language is other than English.
  • Assists school personnel in diagnosing the special educational needs of bilingual and limited-English speaking children.
  • Assists school personnel in prescribing a meaningful program of instruction for bilingual and limited-English speaking children.
  • Assists school staff in the evaluation of academic and social growth of bilingual and limited-English speaking students.
  • . Assists in the development, compilation, field testing and revision of materials related to E.S.L. or bilingual/bicultural instruction.
  • In cooperation with the Principal and Site Manager, may provide school staff with workshops or in-service courses relating to bilingual/bicultural education.
  • Works in cooperation with Principal, Site Manager and staff to accomplish necessary CELDT testing and reporting..
  • Assists in maintaining and upgrading bilingual resources to insure that relevant instructional and reference materials are continuously available to students and staff.
  • Assists school staff in all aspects of communication with homes of limited-English speaking children, such as parent conferences, letters, translation of notices, etc.
  • Provides direct instruction to students, upon assignment.
  • Performs other related tasks and responsibilities as directed.
